The Only Son:Autumn/Winter 2011The Visible Writer For Autumn Winter 2011, The Only Son looks to the prestigious literary scene of the 19th century and in particular French poets, including Arthur Rimbaud and his influence upon modern culture. Additionally the process of writing itself becomes integral to the collection; tools such as the typewriter, letter-stamps through to stacks of papers are transposed into a collection that reflects the modern aesthetics of The Only Son. The poetic exploration begins with the concept of layering. Looking at the intrinsic beauty of piled-high stacks of papers in a writers studio, this effect is recreated within the collection. First in print on shirting, jackets, dresses and trousers and also by layering the fabrics of the garments themselves. Patchwork details are used on pockets and panelling to give dimension to classic items such as bomber jackets and zip-up hoodies. As with paper, garments can be torn and deconstructed when zips are opened, creating tears or a folding effect altering proportions, used on wool coats, leather jackets, skirts and dresses. Multi-directional ribbing on knitwear creates texture, while layered hoods give volume. Asymmetric Ankle-length dresses conjure fluidity in movement. A take on a classic wide legged trouser in jersey knit also shows comfort and modernity. A Winter palette drawn from the earth in shades of ash, clay, charcoal, umber, and forest green blends subtly with faux suede, lambskin leather, merino wool, jersey knit, and sand-washed silk, defining a dramatic ambience for the collection. Clean lines and geometric details of folded paper are seen again on the functional backpack/tote. Heeled ankle and low-cut boots are produced in carefully selected skins, while geometric black metal embellishment adds a touch of toughness. The Only Son also includes a capsule collection of jewellery. More so than ever this collection stands in its own right and further emphasises the literary theme. Jewellery resembles typebars from 19th century typewriters and letterpresses, with extracts from poems seen on the rings, necklaces and bracelets. |
